Emergency Treatment

Dental emergencies arise when we least expect them and probably have you searching frantically for “emergency dental care near me.” Thankfully, at Killingly Dental Care, we save openings in our schedule every day so we are able to see patients who are having dental emergencies immediately. We will fit you in as soon as possible during normal business hours to alleviate your pain and to diagnose the problem. Ignoring the pain and hoping it will stop could lead to serious oral health issues, overall health issues, and increased pain.

Locating Emergency Dental Services

To reach our emergency dentists in Killingly, please call our office: (860)779-1053 . If you call during a time when the practice is not open, you will have access to our dentists' emergency numbers and we will schedule the first available appointment possible to treat your urgent dental issue.

What Is Emergency Dental Care?

Emergency dental care is any care that you need to relieve pain. As your dentist, whether you are a new patient or an existing patient, we will alleviate your pain as soon as possible.  Emergency dentists at Killingly Dental Care treat issues that could lead to major problems if left unattended, such as a cracked tooth. Our emergency dental office treats:

  • Toothaches resulting from decay (cavities) or minor injuries
  • Chipped, cracked, fractured teeth and fillings
  • Emergency tooth extractions (tooth removal)
  • Wisdom tooth pain
  • Lost filling or a missing crown
  • Tooth avulsion (tooth knocked out due to trauma)
  • Pain from orthodontic devices or problems with the device, such as a poky wire
  • Dental infections that cause pain or swelling
  • Loose Teeth

Knocked Out a Tooth, What To Do...

Dentists refer to a knocked-out tooth as an "avulsed" tooth. This is one of the most serious dental emergencies for permanent teeth. However, the damage can be fixed. If you act quickly, there's a good chance the tooth can be saved.

What You Can Do:

  1. Call your dentist right away!
  2. Handle the tooth very gently
  3. If the tooth is dirty, hold it by the upper part (the crown) and rinse it with milk. If you don't have any milk, rinse it with water. DO NOT WIPE THE TOOTH.
  4. Keep the tooth moist. Drop it into a glass of milk or place the tooth in the cup with the saliva.
  5. Try slipping the tooth back into its socket. In many cases, it will slip right in. Make sure it's facing the right way. Don't try to force it into the socket. If it doesn't go back into place easily and without pressure, then just keep it moist (in milk, saliva or water) and get to the dentist as soon as you can.

When Should I Visit the Emergency Room for Urgent Dental Care?

There are dental emergencies where you should call 911, visit the emergency room instead of contacting our dental office. If you experience the following symptoms, do not hesitate to go to the ER.

  • Severe bleeding that will not stop
  • Severe swelling of your face or gums, especially if it impairs your breathing
  • If your teeth or gums have experienced serious trauma from an accident
  • Difficulty breathing (dental infections can cause airway blockages)
  • High fever (dental infections can cause fevers)

If your problem is not severe enough to warrant a trip to the ER, and you feel that you can wait until we have office hours, call our emergency dental office for an appointment.

How Much Do Emergency Visits Cost?

It depends on the emergency and what the dentist does to fix the problem. If you searched for an “emergency dental office near me”, you’ve found a qualified dental office with us. Our dentist may alleviate your pain at the initial appointment and then ask you to return for a permanent solution later. Our emergency dentists will discuss the estimated cost with you during your appointment. There will be no surprises or bills that have not been previously discussed. If you have dental insurance, it will normally cover a large portion of dental emergency treatment.

Emergency procedures are an unexpected expense, sometimes without insurance. However, we accept credit cards, offer payment options and participate in dental discount programs. Signing up for CareCredit® can help you to save on dental procedures. While not an insurance plan, you will enjoy significant discounts on preventative, restorative and cosmetic procedures, and everyone is accepted.
